Daniel Tapatai, a 17-year-old videographer from Baker Lake, emerged victorious in the Focus on Safety Youth Video Contest, hosted by the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission for Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. His winning entry, a concise two-minute video, provides essential safety guidelines for workers at the Qulliq Energy Corp. power plant in Baker Lake, where Tapatai previously worked as a summer student. Reflecting on his experience, Tapatai mentioned reading a safety manual during his training, which inspired his award-winning video entry.

Tapatai, awarded $1,000 for his winning video, plans to upgrade his camera gear with the prize money. Running his own videography business in Baker Lake, he aspires to continue filmmaking and honing his craft. Winning this contest adds to his accolades, affirming his status as an award-winning filmmaker with multiple victories under his belt.
Tapatai’s success extends beyond workplace safety videos. Last year, he won a three-day trip to Banff National Park after clinching first place in a video contest sponsored by Take Me Outside, a non-profit promoting outdoor recreation. Rick Hunt, president and CEO of the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission, emphasized the contest’s role in educating youth about workplace safety while fostering creativity and sharing knowledge among young workers in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.
