Mr. Speaker, mental health concerns affect one-fifth of Canadians annually, yet just 23% feel at ease discussing them with employers. Today, I want to highlight the Government of the Northwest Territories’ commitment to prioritizing employee psychological well-being.
Traditionally, workplace safety has focused on physical hazards. However, the GNWT now emphasizes mental health through initiatives like The Working Mind program, which is mandatory for all managers. Nevertheless, training alone isn’t sufficient.
The GNWT has integrated the national psychological health and safety standard, aiming to enhance recruitment, retention, and productivity. The Department of Finance’s new policy addresses both physical and psychological risks, ensuring comprehensive employee support.
This policy underscores the GNWT’s dedication to employee well-being and acknowledges the importance of understanding and addressing psychological risks. The 2021 employee survey revealed room for improvement, prompting the GNWT to engage employees in future initiatives.
Creating a psychologically healthy workplace is a collaborative effort. The GNWT urges participation from all levels to effectively promote employee wellness. The goal is to cultivate a supportive culture for generations to come.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
