Oilfield equipment supplier to pay $360,000 after workplace fatality

A Red Deer oilfield equipment company faced a $360,000 penalty after a crane operator suffered fatal crushing injuries by heavy equipment at a worksite in January 2022.

On Jan 13, 2022, an Isolation Equipment Services Inc. worker was operating an overhead crane carrying a valve bonnet when it detached from the rigging, fatally pinning the worker, as per a Monday news release by the province.

Isolation Equipment Services Inc. admitted guilt to a charge under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code for neglecting measures to eliminate potential dangers from dislodged or moved equipment or material. The Crown dropped 28 other charges under OHS legislation.

The company received a $360,000 penalty last Wednesday, with a creative sentencing requirement to allocate $359,000 to Energy Safety Canada for developing competency programs for supervisors handling new, young, or inexperienced workers.

Through creative sentencing, OHS can redirect fine payments to initiatives enhancing workplace health and safety.
