Residents of Burlington gathered to learn about safety measures at a community event hosted by Ward 2 councillor Lisa Kearns at the Art Gallery of Burlington.
Various public service entities, including Halton Region Police Services, Halton Paramedic Services, Burlington Fire Department, Burlington Transportation and Transit, and Burlington By-Law department, explained their roles in ensuring safety.
Additionally, the event featured display tables where attendees interacted with representatives from organizations committed to Burlington’s well-being, such as Crime Stoppers, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, YMCA, BFAST, MP Karina Gould, Burlington Hydro, Region of Halton, Halton Social Services, and others.
Councillor Kearns emphasized safety’s importance, addressing personal security, property protection, community welfare, transit safety, victim support, and preventive measures.
Kearns explained that the forum was in response to community concerns and thanked the organizations present.
Operations Inspector Raf Skwarka from Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) discussed Burlington’s safety, highlighting a decrease in overall crime but noting challenges with auto theft and break-ins.
Staff Sergeant Chris Clarke addressed homelessness, describing efforts to provide support and shelters, though some individuals resist help.
Alex Sarchuk, Commissioner of Community and Social Services for the Region, discussed the Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) framework, emphasizing early intervention to address social issues.
Burlington Fire Department Chief Karen Roche emphasized prevention, highlighting public awareness, fire prevention inspections, and emergency response.
Transportation department speakers discussed traffic safety and infrastructure improvements, including aligned traffic signals and pedestrian crosswalks.
Burlington Transit director Catherine Baldelli highlighted improvements to public transit, including free rides for seniors and youth during evenings and weekends.
Dawn-Marie Lebel, acting superintendent of Halton’s community paramedic program, discussed new initiatives and collaborations with healthcare providers.
Following a Q&A session, Kearns thanked attendees, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in safety discussions.
