Highlights from the 26th Mining Health and Safety Conference

Workplace Safety North has unveiled the lineup of speakers for the 26th annual Mining Health and Safety Conference scheduled from April 16 to 18 in Sudbury. Themed “Inclusive mines, a safer future,” the conference underscores the significance of diversity and equity in fostering safer work environments.

Diversity expert Tina Varughese will deliver a keynote speech titled “Inclusive Leadership: from Silos to Safety,” drawing from her entrepreneurial journey managing a settlement agency. Varughese, recognized as one of “Canada’s Top 10 Notable Speakers” by Ignite Magazine, brings extensive experience from her work with immigrants at the Province of Alberta’s immigration office for fifteen years.

Technology expert Jeff Butler will address “Building an Effective Multi-Generational Workplace.” Butler, renowned as a workplace strategist, delves into human behavior in various work settings. With a research background spanning over 40 industries across four continents, Butler has collaborated with esteemed organizations such as Google, Amazon, John Deere, and Coldwell Banker. He is a two-time TEDx speaker and author of two books on human behavior: The Authentic Workplace and The Key to the New You.

Diver Jill Heinerth, associated with The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, will discuss “Improving the Culture of Safety in High Risk Environments.” Sharing practical insights on risk management, failure, and collaboration, Heinerth draws from her extensive experience leading dives across diverse locations, including Antarctica’s underwater caves within the B-15 iceberg. Heinerth, a bestselling author of “Into the Planet” and the children’s book “The Aquanut,” brings invaluable expertise to the conference.

Anticipating around 300 delegates, the event serves as a premier platform for industry learning and networking. Mike Parent, acting President and CEO of WSN, emphasizes the vital role of the mining industry, stating, “Sudbury and Northern Ontario are centers of tremendous mining industry expertise.” Highlighting the importance of sharing expertise for safer mining operations, Parent notes the conference’s reputation as Canada’s leading mining health and safety event.
